BEST ITALIAN APPETIZERS TO START YOUR DINNER

Buon Giorno! Hai fame?

I hope you guess why I have started this blog with the Italian sentences “Buon Giorno,” meaning “Hello” and “Hai fame?” meaning “Are you hungry?”

Yes, I am going to talk about Italian cuisine right now and introduce you recipes for some Italian appetizers.

Italian appetizers can always be a great choice if you want to start any gathering off on the right foot. So, let’s start with quite a famous crostini.

Crostini

This is a typical Italian appetizer, the main ingredients of which are grilled or toasted bread slices and different kinds of toppings. The toppings can be made from vegetables, cheeses, meats, or just spices and herbs.

It is believed that crostini originated in medieval times. During that period, it was common for peasants to eat their meal on the slices of the bread instead of using ceramics. Gradually this way of eating became a separate dish and took its place in Italian cuisine, becoming its inseparable part.

The main ingredient which you need here is bread slices. You can take a baguette for this purpose and chop it in small slices, brush some olive oil on them and arrange on the baking sheet. Then put them in the oven to make the bread slices crunchy.

After this, you just need to make toppings for which you can choose whatever you want. Here are some toppings to make the bread slices delicious

Make thin slices of smoked salmon and cream cheese, and put some on each bread, add some spices or herbs also.

Or you can make your crostini toppings with pizza ingredients to get small pieces of pizzas. Spoon a tomato sauce on the slices of bread, then add shredded mozzarella and small pieces of pepperoni. Again add some herbs or seasonings.

Here is another way of topping for sliced pieces of bread. Take a blue cheese, add a thin slice of peat and then add some honey and walnuts on top of the mixture.

Shortly, you can work your imagination and create whatever you want to get the tastiest and most appealing toppings for your crostini.

And the next step which you should do here is to put the baking sheet into the oven after you have covered the pieces of bread with toppings and leave there for 10 minutes. This helps the cheese melt, which makes your crostini more inviting.

Bruschetta

Bruschetta is an appetizer somehow similar to the crostini when you look at it. But it is made a little bit differently than crostini. However, it’s also very easy to make. You need just 10-15 minutes to prepare it. Bruschetta is a wonderful finger food to start your gatherings.

To make bruschetta, you again need slices of bread chopped in a way as in the case of crostini, but they should be rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil and salt. Again any kind of topping can work great for this appetizer.

You can mix what you have in your refrigerator if you are in a rush and don’t have enough time to spend on making process. You can make a quick salad with the ingredients you already have, top with it bread slices, put in the oven, and your appetizer is ready in some minutes.

However, if you have a lot of time, you can lose yourself in the wood of bruschetta topping recipes and find the one which will be the most appealing for you and make it.

Variations for bruschetta topping include tomato, vegetables, beans, cured meat, or cheese. Bruschetta with tomatoes is among the most popular ways of making this appetizer. To make it, you need to make a mixture of chopped tomatoes, basil leaves, garlic cloves, and some seasonings. Top the already toasted bread slices with the mixture and serve them hot.

Italian Nachos

Yeah, nachos can also be Italian-made. How? I will show a recipe for making the most crunching and delicious Italian nachos ever. When I first baked them, it immediately became one of my favorite appetizers. So here is the way you make it.

The ingredients for this recipe include Wonton wrappers, vegetable oil, sauce, chicken breast, shredded cheese, and seasonings. And here is the baking described process step by step.

First of all, you should take the wonton wrappers, slice them in triangles, and fry them in oil until they become light golden. After removing it from the heat, place on the paper towel-lined plate and leave them to drain.

The next step is arranging the fried wrapper into a parchment. Brush them with sauce and pour already baked and shredded chicken breast. Add the mozzarella cheese and seasonings.

Heat the oven 450 F. Put the parchment into the oven under the broiler and let it be baked until the cheese is melted. Don’t go away from the oven, and follow the nachos so that it does not get burnt.

When it is already baked, take out from the oven and serve hot.

Cheesy Broccoli Arancini

This is another fascinating appetizer from Italian cuisine. You will not get disappointed if you give it a try. Though it takes a bit more time for making process than the previous appetizers, it’s worth it. Let’s see what ingredients we need to make this.

Among the main ingredients are carton chicken broth, vegetable oil, uncooked rice, dry white wine, shredded cheese, panko crispy bread crumbs, broccoli and cheese sauce, and spices.

Now let’s pass to the making process. First of all, take a saucepan and heat the chicken broth in it to simmering. Then take a skillet and make a mixture of onion, salt, and rice. First of all, add the oil, cook chopped onion in it with a pinch of salt. Cook until onion is soft and then add the rice and cook for a minute, then add the wine and continue cooking until the wine is absorbed in the mixture. Then do the same with the broth, and in the end, add the cheese. Stir and cook until cheese is melted.

When all is ready, add the seasonings.

Take the mixture and put it into the refrigerator. Let it cool for not less than 2 hours and not more than 10 hours.

During that time, you can make the coating. For that purpose, add the bread crumbs in a mixing bowl, and then add seasonings, such as pepper, salt, etc.

Also, make the core for your balls. This is where we need broccoli. Put it in the microwave and leave it there for 5 minutes.

When the mixture is enough frozen, take out from the refrigerator, add egg, and the remaining bread crumbs. Make small balls with the mixture, putting broccoli into the center of each ball. Coat the balls with bread crumbs.

Then take a large pot and add oil in it. Heat it over 360°F. When the oil is heated, take the balls and fry them in the pot for almost 5 minutes. When the balls get golden brown, it means they are ready. Let them cool a little bit after frying and serve.

So, this was all about Italian appetizers. Italian cuisine is, of course, rich with different other delicious and fantastic dishes, but I think 4 appetizers are enough for this blog. I will speak about other Italian cuisine favorites later in another blog. Now let me finish this blog with a separate recipe for each of the appetizers I have introduced above.
