This is the best recipe for making extra delicious and soft pretzels. It is effortless and quick. You just need to devote some 15-20 minutes to the making process. It’s very promising. You will be astonished by the results when you get the softest and yummiest pretzels in the end.

I always used to buy pretzels from the stores, because my family members are fond of it. And one day, I decided to try and make this fascinating snack at home to avoid buying them every time from stores. I had great success when I tried for the first time. The pretzels that I got at that time were softer and more delicious than those I used to buy from supermarkets.

From that time, pretzels have become an inseparable part of my kitchen. What most appeals to me here is that they don’t require too many ingredients, and it’s a very quick process. I have two working places and should rush from one to another almost every day. I don’t usually have too much time to dedicate myself to the kitchen and bake complicated and time taking recipes. That’s why I prefer those healthy and delicious 10-minute snacks.

Besides, pretzels are very compact and convenient. You can carry them with you everywhere: on picnics, to your workplace for a quick break, etc.

You can enjoy them on your family gatherings, share your movie nights with them, or just serve as a separate snack for your friends. There is much to do with these yummiest things ever.

Pretzels stand out from other snacks with their curious and inviting shape, extra softness, and divine taste. Their taste becomes even better when you eat them sipping in mustard, or nacho cheese, etc.

Let’s pass to its main ingredients and the baking process, and you will be convinced how perfect this recipe is. Just give it a try, and you will not regret it, I assure you.

Well, the main ingredients for this recipe include sort of things which are quite handy, and you may have them at your home already. So, you don’t even need to rush to the stores and start looking for the required ingredients. You just need warm water, flour, salt, sugar, eggs (which is optional), baking soda, active dry yeast, oil, or butter, and you can also use cooking spray, to bake these fascinating things.

Now, let’s see how the baking process goes on. I will also give some tips and show tricks to make your homemade pretzels even better.

Here is a step by step explanation about the preparation process.

First of all, we need to pour the water. Take a large mixing bowl for this purpose.  And pour warm water into it. Then add the active dry yeast into the water. Mix it and let it for 5 minutes to sit. You should wait until the mixture becomes frothy.

When you get that frothy mixture, add salt, sugar, oil or butter and flour to the bowl. Also, you can add some honey to make your pretzels sweeter. Adding these ingredients, start mixing very slowly. Mix until the dry ingredients are mixed in. When the ingredients are mixed in, continue mixing more quickly.

You can use a kitchen stand mixer for this purpose. But if you don’t have that kind of mixer, you can use a kitchen spoon and mix it by hand.

If you have stirred the mixture enough, knead the dough on the table, simultaneously pouring some flour on it. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, pouring enough flour until you get an elastic and soft dough.

Then take another bowl. Use cooking spray to spray oil inside the bowl and put the dough inside the bowl. Take a plastic cover wrap for covering your dough. As soon as you have covered the bowl, let it rest for an hour. During that period, the mixture will be doubled in size.

When you put the dough for rest, there are three main things you can prepare beforehand. First, take the egg and beat it with a teaspoon of water and put it aside. The second thing you must do is preparing water soda coating. Take a large bowl, pour warm water into it, and add some baking soda. You can put it on the stove to be boiled until you shape your pretzels.

And the third one is to preheat the oven to 450°F and use cooking spray to grease two baking sheets with oil.

Now, when your dough has enough rest, it’s finally time to shape the pretzels. Take the dough out of the bowl and put it on a surface that is again lightly floured. Cut the dough into 12 pieces.

Take each piece and form at first a long rope with it and then give the ropes pretzel shapes. Forming the pretzels is the most engaging part for me during this process. My 4-year-old sister is also crazy about forming them. Whenever I start making pretzels, she leaves the kitchen and returns only when it is time to form pretzels from dough ropes. A fascinating experience of cooking, right?

And finally, the last thing which you must do with your pretzels is putting them into boiling water and soda mixture before sending them into the oven.

However, there is also one more thing you can do. When you have arranged all the pretzels on baking sheets, use water and egg mixture to brush pretzels with them. This process is optional, and you can skip it if you don’t want to do it. I usually do this to get golden pretzels after baking them.

Now, you should just sprinkle sugar or salt on the pretzels and transfer them into the oven and cook them until they are golden brown.

Here are some more tips about the process and some questions which may interest you.

Can you store the pretzels?

Yes, you can store them in 2 ways. You can store already baked pretzels and still unbaked pretzel forms. If you want to store not-baked forms, don’t brush them with egg and don’t sprinkle salt on them. Just put the pretzels in foil and put them in a ziplock bag. Put the bags in the refrigerator. Why don’t we sprinkle salt and brush with egg before storing them? Because in that case, your pretzels will become soggy. That’s why we add salt before baking them. If you want to bake your stored pretzels, first of all, reheat them for some minutes at 400 degrees F and then sprinkle salt or brush with eggs. You can bake them now.

However, you can also save already baked pretzels if you don’t want to eat all of them straight after baking. You can store them for 1-2 days in a paper bag.

Why do we brush them with egg?

This is for making their color more golden. Also, it helps the salt to get stick to the pretzels when you sprinkle it on them.

How to make pretzels flavorful?

Pretzel dough itself has very little flavor. They get some of their flavors when you dip them into the baking soda bath, and a brush of butter and a sprinkling of salt. But to give them some extra flavor, you can use different toppings like cinnamon-sugar, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds.

What does baking soda bath make with pretzels?

Well, this is actually a chemical process, the one that is known as the Maillard reaction. To be more clearly, the soda bath stops the dough from rising as it bakes. Also, it is responsible for their browned outside crust and chewiness.
